BUGEACUL CA PA TELEORMAN

Romanian

PRONUNCIATION: BOO-djei-ah-cool cah pah TEH-leh-ohr-MAHN

The -ul ending, pronounced "-oo" (colloquial) or "-ool" (more formal usage) is a form of the Romanian definite article, the equivalent of English "the;" hence bugeacu = "Budchak plain," bugeacul = "the Budchak plain."

TRANSLATION: Bugeacul refers to a plain in the south of Moldavia (known as Budchak by the Turks). The phrase "ca pa" means "as by." Teleorman is the name of judeţ (county) in Muntenia in south-central Romania. The name Teleorman is of Turkic origin and means "crazy forest."
